See….

Now you won’t give money to charity or the homeless man on the corner but you will make time to fulfill the request to someone millions of miles away……that you’ve never met.

Now according to NBC-2 That’s what happen to a The 50-year-old Lee County nurse, who we’ll refer to as “Sue,” gave away a fortune to a man who she thought cared about her without ever meeting.

“Unless you’ve been there and had it happen to you, it’s hard to understand how you would fall victim,” she said.

She first encountered her would-be scammer over the dating website Match.com last year. It was her first effort to date following the death of her husband of 20 years.

“They go after widows, they go after elderly people they know who potentially may have dollars,” she said.

But what started as a business venture quickly turned into something more emotional.

“He had a broker, supposedly, that was looking worldwide for plots of land big enough to build luxury condos and apartments,” she said. “Flowers. He’d send me chocolates. He’d send me poems and poetry, all the things that people do when they’re courting each other.”

Over a six month period in 2012, she wired the scammer money in Ghana. In all, $450,000 was lost.

“It’s unbelievable in some ways because I thought I was doing everything I needed to do to protect myself,” she said.

To keep the dough coming, scammers sent invoices and statement detailing Sue’s investment dollars, but they were all fake. She finally caught on when the scammer said he needed more money to get out of jail in Ghana.

“I contacted the American embassy in Ghana and found out that there was no such person,” she said.

Now Sue’s left with nearly half a million dollars in financial obligations—because not all of the money was hers.

“I’m now going to be responsible for paying all that off when I say the amount it continues because I took out loans,” she said.
